What is Chiropractic?

Robert Hollingsworth, D.C., ChiropracticChiropractic is the art and science of healing the body by affecting the nervous system through spinal adjustments. Chiropractors use natural and conservative methods to promote the body’s own healing capacity.

Chiropractic is non-invasive, and is frequently a more effective than surgery. Chiropractic is holistic, in that it treats the human body as a complete system and attempts to promote the body’s impressive ability to heal itself.

How does chiropractic work?

Chiropractic, Pacific Chiropractic ClinicChiropractic works because you are self-healing and regulated by your nervous system. Chiropractic care is based on locating and removing interference to your natural health state through gentle, effective adjustments. A common interference to the nervous system is a subluxation or misalignment of the vertebrae of the spine. Improper motion or position of vertebra can also irritate or compromise nerve function. By adjusting the skeletal system back into normal alignment, the nervous system becomes better balanced, and the body can resume its normal management of our overall health.

What chiropractors do

Pacific Chiropractic Clinic

  • Consultation and history is designed to give specific information on medical history and current conditions. It also helps establish if your condition is in the realm of chiropractic care.
  • Examination procedures enable the doctor to identify your specific condition by a thorough spinal exam, ranges of motion, muscle testing, neurological, postural, and orthopedic tests.
  • Adjustments are applied to gently return a vertebra towards its normal position. Physical therapies and soft tissue therapies may be performed. Muscle balancing, nutritional information, and exercises may also be employed.

Regular chiropractic care

  • Restores and maintains a full range of motion.
  • Promotes full function.
  • Improves biomechanics.
  • Optimizes performance and coordination.
  • Maintains joint stability.
  • Induces a sense of well-being and relaxation.
  • Improves nutrition to discs, joints, and tissues.
  • Reduces risk of injury and degeneration.

Chiropractors check the spine regularly to evaluate the motion of your joints. Good motion is essential for the healthy discs and joints, permitting the exchange of nutrients, fluids, and wastes. Without movement, discs and joints may degenerate quickly. Motion also reduces the formation of scar tissue. Fibrosis occurs in motionless joints and can lead to stiffness and degeneration. Many athletes seek regular chiropractic care to promote healing, improve performance, and reduce the risk of future injuries.

Adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments add motion to areas that are fixated or not moving right. This helps restore nervous system integrity and can improve the healing process. Chiropractic adjustments are specific, targeted, and focused.

1) Abnormal motion or position of spinal bones. Physical trauma such as improper lifting, car accidents, repetitive motion and poor sleeping habits can cause spinal problems. Emotional stress and chemical imbalances are common causes, too.

2) Abnormal nervous system function. Improper motion or position of vertebra can irritate spinal nerves. This can impair the function of tissues and organs and the system controlled by these nerves.

3) Abnormal muscle function. Muscles supporting the spine can weaken or become tight and spasmed. Scar tissue and adhesions can infiltrate these malfunctioning muscles, changing their elasticity.

4) Abnormal soft tissue function. Discs, ligaments, and other soft tissues can malfunction. They have poor blood supply, so proper healing often requires continued care, even after the relief of obvious symptoms.

5) Abnormal spine function. The body’s long term response is often degenerative changes and bone spurs.
